Glossary: the ranch vocabulary

All Cerrito code and documentation is written in English, and each ranch term has exactly one English word. The app itself shows ranchers Spanish or English; this list is for everything else. Approved by Rodolfo, 2026-09-25; corrected by him 2026-09-26 (US usage for the fenced unit; empadre is the act of breeding, not the season).

English (use this)	Spanish (what the rancher says)	Meaning
pasture	potrero	A fenced grazing unit inside a ranch. (Not “paddock”, which is British usage. “Improved pasture” below is a LAND TYPE, not a unit.)
herd	hato	The animals on an operation or a ranch.
rangeland	agostadero	Natural, unimproved grazing land.
improved pasture	pradera	Seeded, often irrigated grazing land.
forage	pasto, forraje	What the cattle eat off the ground.
clip	muestra, corte	A measured sample of forage, cut and weighed.
breeding	empadre	Getting the females bred: putting them with a bull, or inseminating. Recorded as a breeding exposure (the ledger event exposure).
breeding season	temporada de empadre	The period the bulls are in with the females.
preg check	palpación	Checking a female for pregnancy.
weaning	destete	Separating a calf from its dam.
calf	becerro, becerra	A young animal before weaning.
breeding female	vientre	A cow or heifer kept to produce calves.
AU	UA	Animal unit — the standard grazing animal used to size demand.
